Express Entry is a pathway created by the Canadian government to facilitate the movement or immigration of foreign nationals. It is designed with the goal to further develop the country’s economy through a quicker and simpler immigration process for skilled people who want to permanently settle in Canada.

How Express Entry Works

There are three categories an aspiring immigrant can choose from depending on his qualifications. Each category has its own requirements.

  1. Canadian Experience Class
  2. Federal Skilled Worker Program
  3. Federal Skilled Trades Program

To be eligible in any of the three categories, an applicant needs to collect points through his educational background, work experience, language ability, age, family, and other factors. Once the applicant has submitted his profile, his application enters the Express Entry pool and is ranked using the Comprehensive Ranking System. An Invitation to Apply (ITA) is sent to applicants in the pool with the highest ranking. After this, the submission of required documents and processing of application happens.

Latest News

Express Entry draws for all categories are set to resume by July 2022. Since the later part of 2020, there were no draws for Foreign Skilled Workers and Foreign Skilled Trades Programs. While the draw for Canadian Experience Class has been halted in early 2021. Since then, Express Entry draws have been limited to those with provincial nominations and processing times have drastically increased due to the Covid-19 pandemic. But with the government’s latest announcements, applicants can expect draws to resume in early July 2022 and processing times to be back to six months, just as it was pre-pandemic.

So What Should You Do Now?

If you already have an active Express Entry profile, the most important thing you should do now is to try to increase your score. Update your work experience, re-take your language test, and others to improve your score. You can also start sending job applications. Having a job offer increases your score. Plus, you can also qualify for the Provincial Nominee Program which still conducts regular draws.
