During the previous post, we talked about Express Entry. This is the program of the Federal Government to facilitate the immigration of foreign nationals to Canada. The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) implements this program and has the authority to grant permanent residence to foreigners. So, what is Provincial Nominee Program or PNP? If you are just starting your research and still confused about what it is all about, then stay with us. We are answering the question “ What is Provincial Nominee Program?” and other related questions you might be asking yourself.

What is Provincial Nominee Program?

Provincial Nominee Program or PNP is a pathway operated by different Canadian provinces to address shortages for in-demand occupations, to create more businesses, and essentially, to boost the economy. They do this by recruiting or “nominating” foreign workers, entrepreneurs, and international students who possess qualifications that could contribute to their economic goals.

Which provinces can I apply for PNP?

The provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, and Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories and Yukon all have PNPs. There is also a nominee program being implemented by the Atlantic provinces called the Atlantic Immigration Program or AIP. On the other hand, the province of Quebec has a separate immigration procedure.

How do I get nominated in PNP?

Within the Provincial Nominee Programs are different streams which also have different requirements. For foreign skilled workers, the most basic requirements are work experience, education, and language ability. Most of the streams require that you have secured a job offer. While some, you just need to have an active Express Entry profile. In some streams, you can earn additional points if you have family members in the province. Check the website of the different provinces you are interested in to learn more about the specific requirements.

Can I become a permanent resident through PNP?

Your nomination itself does not mean you have permanent residency. Only the IRCC can give you permanent residency. What you get from your nomination is an additional 600 points in your Express Entry application which guarantees you a spot on the next draw.

Do I need to hire a consultant to get a nomination?
